We absolutely love dropping objects and seeing them fall! Gravity is our favorite force! The Egg Droppers were challenged to drop eggs from the first floor balcony without breaking them. As they explain, they needed to reduce the speed of the fall, in order for the impact energy to be smaller. Egg Droppers managed to do that twice! Using paper cups, cotton and paper dishes, they simulated a helicopter, whose fan is used to make the most of the air resistance, a small force which gets bigger when the surface is bigger. On the third try, the falling egg wasn’t so lucky… Congratulations Egg Droppers! You are true pioneers!
Our experiment was based on the concepts of the dynamic and kinetic energy. We needed to design and create a structure that we would fly from a certain height and would prevent the egg from breaking when reaching the ground. In the language of physics, you have to reduce the amount of energy transferred from dynamic to kinetic (energy) in the shell of the egg after its fall.
To achieve this, we discusssed in the class with our teacher on what is necessary to reduce the speed of the egg when it reaches the earth.
We came up with a helicopter-shaped structure, which would more safely transport the egg to the ground, by reducing the speed of the fall thanks to the air resistance and increasing the time of impact with the ground!

This is such a fun activity, you're divise looks super creative! Great way to learn about physics and to learn how to best pack your eggs when you buy them from the store ;) We hope you made good use of the surviving eggs afterwards.
